About FKEY's
-----------
Do you know what an FKEY is? If you know what an FKEY is then skip this part and go to 'About Screen-Dump ]['. Don't worry if you don't know about FKEY's, there is a lot that many people don't know about their Macintosh's capabilities, and a major one is FKEY's. An FKEY is very similar to a Desk Accessory (DA). A DA is a program under the Apple Menu; for example, the Control Panel. Instead of selecting something under the Apple Menu and FKEY (Function Key) is selected by typing a combination of keys. These keys are [Command]-[Shift]-[number], where number is a number between 0 and 9. Four FKEY's come with your Macintosh, already installed. These are [Command]-[Shift]-[1] which ejects any disk in your internal Floppy drive; [Command]-[Shift]-[2] which ejects any disk in your external floppy drive (if you have one); [Command]-[Shift]-[3] which will take a photo of your screen and will save it as a MacPaint file; and last, [Command]-[Shift]-[4] which will print you screen on the printer. The difference between an FKEY and a DA is that a DA can run while other programs are running, but an FKEY will halt the program until you are done using the FKEY.
About Screen-Dump ][
----------------------
Well, you just went and purchased your Mac II; or you went and purchased you large screen (Radius, SuperMac, Big Picture, etc...); or maybe you went and bought Stepping OutΓäó for you regular Mac. If you got any of these you must have gotten quite a shock when you tried FKEY 3 & 4 (The screen dumps). On the Mac II in b/w mode it will dump your picture to disk flipped on its side, how are you supposed to edit that; isn't that why you dumped it; to edit it?? Well, try dumping the screen to printer. It comes out right side up but cuts off an inch on the right of the screen. Don't even look what it does in color mode, produces ONLY stripes! Well, the screen-dump on the regular Mac's with a large screen will cut the screen to the size of the regular Mac screen. With Stepping OutΓäó it will cut the screen to regular screen size as well (342 by 512 pixels).
Well, many people take the screen-dump option for granted, it is a very useful command. Well, help has come, that is what Screen-Dump ][ is here for! SD][ will work on all Macintosh's. It will work fully in color mode on the Mac II and will adapt to all screen sizes.
For Disk-Dump ][ and Print-Dump ][: In Color mode on the Macintosh II it will turn all light colored pixels to white and all dark colored pixels to black. That is, all light colors (yellow, cyan. etc...) will be white whereas all dark colors (red, blue, etc...) will turn black. So, if you have an icon that is cyan and another that is red, when you screen dump the screen only the red icon will be visible. You may say "Why not have all pixels, colored and black be black, and all white pixels be white?" Well, lets say you want to dump a picture that has a full spectrum of colors; it is all color, no white pixels are present. If we used the quoted way the screen dumped would be a totally black picture. With it done the other way there will be a much better representation of the screen when dumped.
For Color-Dump ][: Color-Dump ][ will only work on a Macintosh ][. CD][ will take a snapshot of the screen, in full color, and will save the screen as a GrayViewΓäó document. GrayView is widely available from GEnie, Compuserve, and other Bulletin Board Systems.
** When referring to 'Color' on the Macinotsh ][, we are referring to both Color and Gray shades.
Installing ScreenDump ][
-------------------------
To install SD][, simply choose either Install Disk-Dump ][, Install Print-Dump ][…, or Install Color-Dump ][... from the FILE menu. A new product has come on the market named 'Suitcase' that lets you run DA's, FKEY's, and Font's without putting them in the system file. This let's you easily back-up your system and keeps your system file small. If you use Suitcase choose the 'FKEY File (Suitcase)' button. If you don't use Suitcase choose 'System FKEY (Normal)'. For Disk-Dump ][ you have the option of the FKEY saving with either FullPaint or MacPaint. That is, when you activate the FKEY do you want it to save as a FullPaint file or a MacPaint file. If you want to it save as FullPaint than select 'FullPaint' and vice-versa for MacPaint. When you are finished choosing your options click on the Install button.
Next will appear a box asking you to select a slot to install SD][ into. 'Slot' refers to to NUMBER is [Command]-[Shift]-[NUMBER]. You would most likely install Disk-Dump-][ into slot 3 and Print-Dump-][ into slot 4. But if you decide not to than slots 5-0 are still open for use. After deciding which slot to use click on the appropriate slot you wish to install SD][ into. If an FKEY already occupies the slot you chose, a message will appear telling you which FKEY is in the slot. It will then give you the choice of selecting another slot or replacing that FKEY. Otherwise, a dialog will appear informing you that the installation is in progress. If all goes well a dialog box will appear telling you the installation was successful.
Using Disk-Dump ][
--------------------
Once you are done installing the FKEY, quit from SD][ installer. Choose whether you want to dump just the current window or whether you want to dump the entire screen. If you want to just dump the current window than make sure the CapsLock Key is off (caps-lock key is up). If you want the whole screen to be dumped (i.e. the menu bar, the background, all visible windows, etc...) than make sure the CapsLock key is on (caps-lock is depressed). If there is no front window and the Caps-Lock is off than the whole screen will be dumped.
Now activate the FKEY. A save dialog will appear, select a name to save the document as and choose SAVE. If you are using larger screens, ScreenDump ][ will offer you the following options: Clip, Edit,or Scale. If you select Clip than SD][ will save whatever it can fit. I.e. If you have a screen that is 640 pixels wide by 700 pixels high, clip will slice off the screen to fit into a 576 pixel wide by 720 pixels high picture. This would end you up with a picture 576 pixels wide by 700 pixels high. Choosing Edit will show the screen and will give you a drag box. Moving the mouse will move the box around. Once you have the part of the screen you would like to save inside the box, click the button. There will be a pause and then the screen will save. Last, scale, will take the screen and will scale the whole screen to fit inside a 576 by 720 pixel picture. For the Disk-Dump it is not advisable to use SCALE since it is quite sloppy. On the Mac II in color mode disk-dump will take a few seconds to save. It is a bit quicker in b/w mode on any Mac.
Using Printer-Dump ][
----------------------
Before activating the FKEY decide whether you want CapsLock up or down, as in Disk-Dump ][. When activating the FKEY you will get the same options as in Disk-Dump ][, except a save dialog will not appear. Scale works very well in Print-Dump ][, unlike the Disk-Dump ][.
Chose you option and once you are done a standard Page-Setup dialog will appear. You may choose any options you wish. Using the Page Setup can be very useful; on the imagewriter, Page Setup will let you choose 50% reduction, or if you want it will let you print vertically instead of horizontally. Using the LaserWriter, Page Setup offers many other options. IF YOU DID NOT SELECT SCALE FROM THE PREVIOUS DIALOG THAN CHOOSE 'TALL ADJUSTED' for the ImageWriter. If you choose scale than make sure 'Tall Adjusted' is turned off. Once you are done, select OK and you will be presented with a standard Print Dialog.
Choose you option and than choose OK. (You cannot print in Draft mode for SD][ on the ImageWriter, make sure you select only Best or Faster.) Printing will start, if you want to stop in the middle of printing then hold down [Command]-[Period]; after a few second printing will be aborted.
Using Color-Dump ][
------------------
Once you are done installing the FKEY, quit from SD][ installer. Choose whether you want to dump just the current window or whether you want to dump the entire screen. If you want to just dump the current window than make sure the CapsLock Key is off (caps-lock key is up). If you want the whole screen to be dumped (i.e. the menu bar, the background, all visible windows, etc...) than make sure the CapsLock key is on (caps-lock is depressed). If there is no front window and the Caps-Lock is off than the whole screen will be dumped.
Now activate the FKEY. A save dialog will appear, select a name to save the document as and choose SAVE. You will then be asked whether to save the screen as Pixel Paint format, GrayView format, GIFF format, or StartUpScreen format. For editing I recommend saving as Pixel Paint format, that is if you have Pixel Paint, but Pixel Paint acts like Mac Paint by chopping the picture to a 576 by 720 pixel picutre. For example, if you are using the standard Mac monitor (13" color or 12" B/W) on the Mac II, about an inch off the right side of the screen will be clipped off. if you have any problems with color representation I suggest that you save as GIFF format, since it differentiates colors the best. If you want to save as a StartUpScreen just choose StartUpScreen and once saved make sure the name of the file is 'startupscreen' and place it in the System Folder. Once you have chosen the format you prefer the screen will be saved.
Compatibility
------------
Screen-Dump ][ is compatible with all Macintosh computers, including the SE and II. Currently SD][ is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 'Print Monitor' while in MultiFinder. While using Multi-Finder, Print-Dump ][ will not work while on the Finder level, but when using a program Print-Dump ][ will work. Disk-Dump ][ will work 100% correctly in Multi-Finder. Last, Color-Dump ][ is totally incompatible with Multi-Finder. If there is enough user response SD][ will be compatible with Multi-Finder and Print Monitor in future releases. SD][ is compatible with both the LaserWriter and Imagewriter (I and II). It should also be compatible with any printer that works with such programs as MicroSoft ExcelΓäó and MicroSoft WorksΓäó. There have been reported bugs in LaserWriter driver v.4.0. These bugs may cause Screen-Dump ][ not to work correctly. You should try your best to use print driver 5.0 or later.
Miscellaneous
-------------
Included in SD]['s File menu is the command ΓÇ£TransferΓÇ¥. This menu choice allows you to run another program immediately, rather than quitting to the Finder. After you choose this command, a dialog box will appear listing the applications on your disks. Simply click on an applicationΓÇÖs name and then click on the Transfer button and you will be transferred to that application. Transfer is not to be used while using Multi-Finder and therefore is un-highlited while using Multi-Finder.

Screen-Dump ][ is being distributed under the ShareWare system. This entitles you to review Screen-Dump ][ before paying for it; try it out and see if you feel it is a worthy addition to your software library. If you choose to keep Screen-Dump ][, you are on your honor to send in the $12 registration fee and become a registered user. Otherwise you must destroy all of your copies of Screen-Dump ][ (or better yet, give them to your friends). You are at a real advantage in that you can use Screen-Dump ][ before you decide if you want to purchase itΓÇöplease donΓÇÖt take advantage of that privilege. Considerable time was spent developing and perfecting Screen-Dump ][ and sending in your registration fee will insure the development of many more highΓÇôquality, inexpensive programs.

Volume Key -- Easily set the speaker volume from an FKEY. Inside a game and can't access the control panel?!? Volume Key will take care of that.
